Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Kallum S — 05 Sep 2015
From the title, you can guess this isn't going to be the cliché story of friendships, love or loss. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, just happens to be the small gem of the year.
Brimming with wit, awkward humour and neat camera work, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's coming of age tale walks the line of self discovery, and friendship transcending into some more special, tender and moving. The title may be misleading slightly, but this story centres around Greg, and how he matures when he warms to Rachel.
At times, it's difficult to know where Greg's tale will go because it's incredibly original. What forms by the end is moving and beautiful, but blurred by what's left behind.
The film may have that inevitability, but it doesn't stop you hoping for that happy ending.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is narratively brilliant, and worked perfectly with clever camera work, and beautiful setpieces. I love it and so will you.
