Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Prentice S — 19 Sep 2015
"Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is another stab at doing the angsty teen film from the perspective of that kid in high school that gets along with everyone without actually having friends. Unlike the comedies that have tried to pull this off, to varying degrees of success, "Me and Early and the Dying Girl" is a solid story that pacts a whole lot of emotion into two hours.
The script is pure gold: every line uttered screams with an emotional intensity or lack thereof that embodies every classic high school experience. The emotional depth between Greg (Mann) and Rachel (Cooke) is heartbreaking, yet simple and poised, even as Rachel declines into the death throws of her cancer.
This isn't the best film to capture the essence of high school, but it s a damn fine film in it's attempt.
