Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Craig F — 17 Oct 2015
The source material for this film was the best book I've read in something like four or five years. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon more than capably manages to capture the tone and absolutely gutbusting humor and synthesize it into a film that is wholly unique, alive, and absolutely devastating.
The performances by the three young leads are remarkable and totally engrossing. The soundtrack was incredible. The tribute/parodies of film nerd classics I hold near and dear to my heart ("Senior Citizen Kane," "The 400 Bros," "Eyes Wide Butt,"a million Werner Herzog references) caused physical injury to my knee from slapping it so hard.
The fine balance between telling a story that could easily be maudlin and after school special-y and making it something deeply profound and true without being cloying. This is going to wind up being my favorite film of the year, and I don't think the race will be particularly close.
