Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Eytan D — 22 Dec 2015
Alfonso Gomez Rejon is a director to watch out for. If his remake of "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" didn't prove that, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" does promisingly. Despite what you might be thinking, this is not a typical girl-with-cancer tearjerker.
"The Fault in Our Stars" wasn't either. This movie is a spectacularly dorky, funny, passionate, appropriately sad and moving coming-of-age tale with charm to spare. Gomez Rejon and screenwriter Jesse Andrews (who adapted his own novel) avoid the mushy-gushy and ground the film entirely in reality with its clever witticisms, passion for film, and its entirely lovable characters.
Every cast member is pitch perfect, particularly Thomas Mann and Olivia Cooke. Though it just barely slips under the radar as an independent film, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is one of the best movies of 2015 and is not to be missed.
