Review of McLintock! (1963) by John D — 18 Jan 2010
Many sources lead to the final product that is "McLintock!". I say product, with reference to the Wayne phenomenon and the industry Amercian cinema had become long before 1963. Having said that, one must also raise their hat to possibly one of the most "liberal" characters Wayne has ever portrayed, alongside one of his most charming.
Maureen O'Hara's presence is a pefectly balanced mediation between a nuclear warhead and a precious snowflake, allowing Wayne, and his cohorts to look like fools at times, yet never surrendering their dignity.
Not a inch for inch "remake" of The Taming of the Shrew as initial indications may suggest, "McLintock!" has enough clout of its own making to show big name American cinema using its brain as well as its brawn.
