Going in I knew very little about the MacFarland story. However, knowing it was "based" on a true story with Disney running the show I figured film would be very loosely based on the true story, and have a whole lot of "cheesy" for entertainment purposes.
I also felt a little bias going in that a movie about cross country could hold its own say against a Football, Basketball, Baseball, or Soccer story. However, I have to say Disney and stealing a quote from baseball "hit a home run". MacFarland was extremely inspiring nor did it have the "cheesy" of a typical Disney "based on a true story" film. Did the movie 100% tell the true story of Coach White, No however it turns out not to be too far off. For what was changed I give credit to the director for making it work. I'm also very pleased with Costner's performance. I myself was ready to lace up the tennis shoes for run at the end.
