Review of McFarland, USA (2015) by Charles S — 21 Mar 2015
One of the measures of a well-told story is the number of missed opportunities. As in cross country running, the lowest score wins. Story of the boys who ran? Check! Story of their families? Check! Anglo family learning to fit in a Latino town? Check!
There were many parts in this movie and every one was well-acted. Loved the team's camaraderie and humor. The actors made you feel they were suffering together, laughing together, losing and winning together. They ran for a month to train from the movie. One of the actors chosen was from McFarland. (You'll have fun trying to guess which one.) Maybe his job was to make sure the other actors really did suffer and overcome adversity. It worked.
