Review of McFarland, USA (2015) by Lance D — 21 Apr 2015
Solid true-life sports movie. Not as polished or as cliche as most in this genre -- which is a good thing -- probably due to being directed by the woman who made the NZ indie hit "Whale Rider".
The differences between white and Hispanic cultures is handled deftly and honestly, and we get to know the players and their families -- which is not always the case with team sports films. And when is the last time you saw an inspiring film about cross country running?! This is not saying "McFarland" redefines the genre, but it's a very nice little film that does not aspire to be more than it is-- and is especially nice to watch with the family.
