Review of McFarland, USA (2015) by Elijah C — 26 Feb 2015
Surprisingly I liked this movie. It moved me with this underdog story of this Latino track team from the hard streets of McFarland. And it is not mostly about their underdog story. No it's mostly about their individual lives and the life of the head coach (Kevin Costner) revolving around them.
The negatives of this movie is that it is a inspirational movie that you have seen before. The movie itself has no suspense and is predictable and cliché. That aspect of the movie irritated me to down grade the film.
I would've liked if the movie would explore the lives of ALL of the track stars not only half of them. The drama felt a little too soap opera for me. The movie is a little too long. Certain scenes could've been cut out.
I wish the movie could've explored the team's life after their underdog season in film except putting their life in subtitles. Ok now the acting is really good and Kevin Costner has his best performance in a long while.
I liked every character in this movie. I found most of the jokes genuinely funny. Entertaining in every way and in every form. I liked this movie as a drama, comedy genre film. I will like to catch this movie another time.
I can say the re watchability of the movie is strong. Strong character traits, actors, story, cinematography, and the list goes on. I advise you to check out this movie if you are curious to watch it like myself.
In my opinion this would've been way better is this was an hour long short film or just be a great true story and leave it as a open documentary. This movie inspired me to do anything of I put in the hardworking and effort into what I'm doing.
For my taste the movie is by the books and sometimes distracting with it's many flaws but overall it is a good inspirational film to share for the whole family. I will have to give 'McFarland USA' a pleasantly surprising B- grading!
