While the sports movie formula is a cliche, you cannot rewrite a true story. However, McFarland USA still proved that these sports stories can be shown in an entertaining manner. The cast, including Costner and the rest of the team, play their parts very well.
This leads to the emotional connection that you feel between every player and their separate lifestyles. They also have the "where are these players now" at the end credits, which is always great to see.
