Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Steven B — 19 Mar 2009
A haunting tale of how the west was won by men and women in search of the american dream. The film's slow pace, set perfectly to early Leonard Cohen songs, takes the brilliant risk of forcing the viewer to pay more attention to the characters than the plot.
It's a cold, wintry western. The characters are caught up in the blizzard of fate yet they do their best to push on, concealing theirs fears and weaknesses in opium clouds and usurped gunfighter reps.
A beautiful retelling of the american mythos discarding its traditional heroes in favor of the overlooked people who lived the dream and died in its making.
