Review of Mazes and Monsters (1982) by Tony P — 03 Sep 2009
What began as a semi-serious visit to Hank's early filmography became a surprisingly dense experience. Hanks could obviously act early on; his performance is stand-out amongst the others. The idea of a man going insane from fantasy roleplay is pretty hilarious until you see Hanks, stark with fear, stabbing another man because he thinks its a Morvil.
The majority of the movie lives in cheesy 80s TV movie land. For instance, one character always and inexplicably wears funny hats, and a love story begins but then is never revisted. It draws lots of unintentional laughter, but it lashes back with some serious stuff when Tom Hanks calls his friends crying "There's blood on my knife! There's blood on my hand!" What's most stupifying is the film's final scene, which is tragic, mean, and completely immoral in the context of the rest of the film.
Watch it and you'll see what I mean.
