Review of May (2008) by Bethany F — 03 Oct 2008
I have a greater appreciation for films with misunderstood and nearly deranged female characters than I do for ones with male characters.
May feels like a 3 hour long film about the saddest weird girl that ever existed, besides Carrie that is.
May's dedication to her work, her facts and especially her doll is really quite disturbed in a way only an extremely lonely socially awkward person can make is disturbing.
Jeremy Sisto is really awesome as May's love interest, he is so barbarically normal (besides his interest in gore romance) that when you first see him you almost want to stop May from putting any interest into him. because from the beginning we all know it'll never work out for her.
Angela Bettis plays May's damaged introverted mousy personality to the umpteenth degree of awesome.
Anna Faris also contributes a raw and real humor to a side of the film, with her quirky air headed comments and her passion for women.
As the film unravels, we get to see inside May's head almost as she unravels in each scene, as she tries more and more to be accepted by others and fill herself with a need to contribute someway to others its heart rendering to see it unfold so badly for her.
By the near end of the film when May finally goes ballistic and rams a pair of scissors in a stoners forehead we're also shocked but relieved from all the tension that has built up watching people walk all over this damaged girl.
In ways when May finally goes on a body part shopping spree to build herself a friend, you feel almost sick because you've sympathized with her, but in a way also very much on her side for the way she has been treated, what person who has been kicked in the head too many times wouldn't say they'd be right next to May dragging the blood soaked cooler down the street?
This film is dynamite, 100% raw original gorgeous writing, characters, music and talent.
I loved it.
