Review of May (2003) by David P — 05 Sep 2008
Top-notch horror picture reminds me of a modern day fusion of "Carrie" and Roman Polanski's "Repulsion". The cast here is watchably quirky and Angela Bettis manages to retain the audience's sympathies for the longest time before she starts to go over the deep end.
It's amazing how much you'll catch yourself rooting for May to catch a break and back away from the brink, but we know that's unlikely to happen. The supporting cast is equally fine as well, with Jeremy Sisto a particular standout here.
This solo directorial debut of Lucky McKee is filled with plenty of visual flourishes, haunting images and a finale that is terrible in both it's gruesomeness and it's inevitability. One of the best horror films of the past ten years.
Tilt: up.
