Review of Maximum Overdrive (1986) by Lee T — 26 Mar 2008
King crafted his debut feature from the flimsiest of premises (see the "Night Shift" compendium for how short "Trucks" really is) and it shows as he struggles to take the film anywhere after gathering everyone into the truck stop and setting up the classic Rio Bravo/Night of the Living Dead premise.
Alas though, I adore this film (childhood classic and all that), dumb as rocks mid eighties action cinema, which also means hilarious and quotable as hell. Estevez is the 'college boy' heroic rebel (you can tell 'cos he has a stud in his ear yeah?) of the piece, elsewhere Lisa Simpson screams a lot and some hicks say 'Bubba' a lot, some trucks crush people to the sound of AC/DC, and machine guns speak in Morse code. Is this appealing to anyone bar me yet?
