Review of Maximum Overdrive (1986) by John T — 27 Sep 2008
Technology rises up against people because of a comet. It's pretty cheesy and there's no good reason why or how things do what they do. An electric turkey cutter comes to life and actually jumps out cutting a girl.... so you can see the ridiculousness. At one point (which was pretty freakin' funny) a coke machine starts spitting cokes out and hitting a little league baseball team. The things are pretty impossible, but entertaining to watch... And Emilio Estevez is in it...
After the first 30 minutes it goes a bit downhill as it stops being about electronic/mechanical devices killing people and is only about semi trucks killing people. And I don't get how all the cars rise up to kill, but you can still get away bey driving a car... which isn't possessed... for some reason.... Yeah, I don't get it. I didn't make the rules, but whatever.
You also get to see one of the worst performances ever... This chick goes from crying hysterically to laughing then to emotionless in less than a minute. None of which look at all believable.
This is Stephen King's first and only movie he directed himself (with good reason)... I'm not going to justify this and say it is a good movie, but I was entertained, and that's what counts.
You know, I still can't figure out one thing. The semis circled around the diner and would run them over if they left... but if they wanted to kill the people, why didn't they just drive through the building. It was made completely of glass and the semi could have easily went right through the door and ran over the people inside...
