Review of Maximum Overdrive (1986) by Stephanie M — 02 Dec 2008
"Who made who?".
Classic 1980s tongue-in-cheek horror from Stephen King himself. Earth is caught in radiation from the comet known as "Rhea-M." Mechanical objects come to life & are in a murderous mood. The movie mainly focuses on a group of people trapped at the Dixie Boy truck stop, led by a post-Breakfast Club Emilio Estevez. A bunch of murderous trucks are ensuring that they don't leave alive led by the Happy Toyz Co. semi with the face of the Green Goblin from Spider-Man mounted on the front.
It has some pretty funny parts. My favourite being the part where the ATM calls Stephen King(in a short cameo) an "asshole." Also the murderous steamroller & pop machine that takes out a baseball coach with a pop can to the forehead.
Pat Hingle plays the scumbag owner of the Dixie Boy in a memorable performance. Emilio is just kind of there but is a bad ass. Also starring Yeardley "Lisa Simpson" Smith as a newlywed bride that is annoying & funny at the same time.
This is a fun & entertaining movie not to be taken seriously. If you take it seriously, you'll probably hate it. Go into it knowing that it's mindless fun & you should enjoy it.
