Review of Maximum Overdrive (1986) by Kevin N — 13 Dec 2009
It's a bad movie, but it has a few appealing attractions. First of all, it is fully a King production; the dialogue has a playful banter to it that sometimes works as it does in his books. It isn't poetry, but it adds a self-reflexion to the film that allows the viewer to ease into its rediculous plot.
The film also boasts some colorful characters who are at least humorous if not sympathetic. The rest of it- well, the rest of it is just awful. While the story isn't exactly brilliant, or even plausible for that matter, it could have been done a little more carefully.
It could have been a scary premise, albeit being an unbelievable one. King's obsession with AC/DC comes across here as overkill; it fits the tone of the film, but the movie is an absolute billboard for the band.
If you're seeing 'Maximum Overdrive' you probably aren't expecting film art, but come prepared for it to fulfill every terrible expectation you've expect from it.
