Review of Maximum Overdrive (1986) by Andrew B — 01 Feb 2009
No matter how skilled of an author Stephen King may be he is no director; that is certain. Maximum overdrive lacks any of the tension or suspense a horror movie should have. Every scene of machine-on-human violence comes off as unintentionally goofy, and any action sequences that occur end abruptly.
The characters in Maximum Overdrive run the gamut between dull and annoying, mostly due to underwhelming performances. Beyond the promise of a novel story concept, the actual plot doesn't make any sense as the motivations of the motivations of the machines become increasingly confusing.
Maximum Overdrive started out with a good idea for a horror film, but poor execution, bad acting, and a convoluted script all drag this film down to the depths of cinematic Hades.
