Review of Max Payne (2008) by Oliver J — 19 May 2011
MINOR SPOILERS INCLUDED!
There is no doubt 'Max Payne' has style and half-decent action sequences but it lacks a strong plot.
Max Payne is played by Mark Wahlberg, Payne is a police officer in the cold case unit, he's devoted his life to finding the murderer of his wife and child. Max's snitch leads him to three drug addicts in a train station, he presses them for information. Natasha (played by Olga Kurylenko) goes home with Max and after he kicks her out for making comments on his dead wife she is found dead the next morning. Max becomes the prime suspect! He sees a tattoo of wings on her arm and this links the case to the murder of his own wife, as she had the same tattoo. He continues to get to the bottom of the mystery as the film continues; meeting Natasha's sister Mona (Mila Kunis) and discovering the truth on a strange morale increasing drug and a conspiracy.
This movie mixes fantasy in the form of the winged beasts and the devil with gritty action sequences, this mixture doesn't quite work. The acting is nothing special and neither was the ending which I expected to be more interesting. The action involved is exciting but without the plot to back it up it's pointless.
