Review of Max Payne (2008) by Jack D — 11 Mar 2010
Frustrated me more than any film for a long time. It had all the elements in place to be really good. A noir driven idea, fantastic cinematography and a strong leading man in Mark Whalberg (who incidentally, after following an Academy Award nominated performance in The Departed with THIS, and the Happening, needs to sack his agent sharpish!).
However, somehow after a promising 10-20 minutes the film deteriorates into mindless drivel. Predictable, prosaic and overlooking narrative for action. Seriously now, a 12 year old could have written a better script.
Threatened in places to buck the computer game movie trend by not sucking, but didn't let us down and eventually the suck fest kicked into high-gear around the 40 minute mark.
Very, very, very poor. Though to be fair, was I expec.
