Review of Max Payne (2008) by Mace R — 02 May 2013
I never played the first two Max Payne games; I started with Max Payne 3 and was immediately enthralled by the gritty, noir feeling of the character and the game.
Well, it seems like the writers of these games make their games just a bit too long, as there's always some either confusing or unbelievable element in them that makes the story confusing/hard to watch. No difference with the movie either unfortunately.
The whole plotline regarding this Super Drug really detracts from this film, because it pulls it out of reality. The scenery would be more expected in a supernatural horror movie, not a gritty detective action movie.
The other thing they fail to do well is the games famous "bullet time". There are a couple in this movie, but after sitting through so much nonsense, they're not at all satisfying. Hell, the Matrix did a better job than this.
When it's all said and done, this movie isn't bad, it's just unfocused. Wooden characters, unbelievable plot and a waste of a good character. If they had just picked one of those three and worked on it instead of spreading themselves thin, this would have been a lot better.
