Review of Max (2016) by Tom K — 05 Jul 2015
It's rare to see a good movie starring a dog. Few studios even try anymore. "Max" deserves an audience, and so does Boaz Yakin, one of the most underrated writer/directors working today. Yes, it gets a bit maudlin here and there, and the plot does get needlessly complicated, but Yakin's direction is so sure-handed, with both the action and the actors, that I can forgive a few weak points.
And Yakin proves again (as he's done with "Remember the Titans," the under-seen "Fresh," and the unappreciated "Safe") that he can get a good performance from his young human lead (Josh Wiggins), as well as his canine lead.
