Review of Maverick (2015) by Stephen M — 27 Mar 2008
I did not grow up with the tv series Maverick, so I had no frame of reference, either with the show and character or with James Garner in the role. I had to take this movie at face value.
And it is worth all the money they win in the poker game played in the film!
This is one of the most entertaining films I can think of. The entire cast is charming, the humour is first rate, the western feel is believable (and yet unbelievable, since they place the characters in the most absurd situations at times!) and I especially loved all the little cameos (I won't tell one of them - it's a game first timers will want to play with themselves!).
Cast in what I think is her only romantic comedy, Jodie Foster is cast against type and she busts that type and reclaims it as her own. This is my other favourite Foster role. The woman is a Goddess.
Admit it, you think so too.
