Review of Maurice (1987) by Steph O — 09 Aug 2010
One of the most beautiful, sad, touching, heart-wrenching romance movies I have ever seen. It is a masterpiece. Based on the book of the same name written by E.M. Forster in 1913 (but not published until 1971), "Maurice" tells the story of the two loves of Maurice Hall's live.
Clive (Hugh Grant) and Alec (Rupert Graves). Maurice meets Clive while attending Cambridge University, but they live in a time where homosexual acts (even just kissing another man) will almost certainly lead to imprisonment.
As Maurice grows older he tries to repress his homosexuality, as his former lover Clive has apparently done. But when Maurice meets Alec later in the film, his entire world changes. I could write about this movie forever, but all I really need to say it that "Maurice" is a beautiful love story and even if you're a bit iffy about 'gay-movies' (which you really shouldn't be, they are amazing) you should definitely watch "Maurice".
Unfortunately it isn't available on DVD in Australia but it's practically everywhere online, and is really worth watching.
