Review of Matinee (1993) by William C — 26 Aug 2012
This is a neat narrative that is certainly a trip down memory lane for those of us of a certain age (especially if you were, like me, a monster mag fan) but also is a neat study of film itself (note the "Fight Pay TV" sign strung below the theater awning.
Like "My Favorite Year," it also focuses on the relationship between an older, somewhat irrresponsilbe adult and a young man who shows a lot of wisdom in spite of his lack of years. John Goodman is a scream as the overblown, self-inflated producer/director/writer who sees himself as Orson Welles but is really little more than a huckster.
