Review of Match Point (2005) by Sergio M — 24 Feb 2010
I only watched this because my friends keep on insisting I have to like woody allen. and I don't.
I don't like woody allen.
I don't like scarlett johansson.
And I don't like j rhys meyers.
Still, everybody thinks this is a masterpiece, so I watched it.
And it's rubbish. boring. felt like switching it off after min 10. soo predictable. you know what's going to happen from minute 2! all the characters were really stereotypical, and rhys meyers performance was appalling, honestly, the worst i've seen in years. and some of the worst pieces of dialogue i've ever seen! omg, those bits when they are flirting, specially in the table tennis scene were even embarrassing!
And london! that london for tourists they show!! more stereotypes. it really annoyed me the fact that scarlett is really poor now and can't afford the big life any more... so she lives, by herself, in a posh neighbourhood in london... and has no income! how does she manage?
Anyway, the film only gets better after minute 80 or so, when he gets the gun. but it's so unrealistic! I didn't believe it for one second!
The film has a very good thing, though. I loved the scene with the tennis ball at the beginning and its echo at the end with the ring, that was brilliant. specially the fact that it actually plays with the viewer and reverses its effect at the end. that was genius. the 2 stars are just for that. pity you have to wait a whole 2 hours of sheer boredome.
The references to dovstoievski are pretty weak, too.
If this was directed for some unknown person, no-one would actually remember it.
