Review of Match Point (2005) by John R — 04 Aug 2010
This film surprised me so much as I expected it to be just another average thriller. After years of sub par work, Woody Allen leaves his beloved New York and ventures to overseas to make this top notch thriller set in London, England.
This is one of Allen's sharpest script in years and deals with mature themes like class and infidelity, and shows how things can easily spiral out of control. It also deals with a lot of morality issues and makes the audience think about how the consequences can be when you keep making bad choices.
The cast is superb and Jonathan Rhys Meyers is perfect as the lead who is battling against what is right and what is wrong. On the screen we see how the potential consequences his character is facing can make him do some dark things. Even Scarlett Johansson is good in this as her character is well developed. In fact all of the characters are written well and very developed.
London looks so beautiful in the movie and the cinematography is well done. The score fits perfectly with the the dark issues presented in the movie. The suspense in this film is fantastic and it builds up nice and slowly. When it reaches the climax it delivers, and it keeps the viewer on the edge for the rest of the film.
Even if you are not a Woody Allen fan you can enjoy this well written and well acted suspenseful thriller, which is one of the best I have seen in a while. This is Allen's best film since Everyone Says I Love You, and it convinces me that Woody has still got it.
