Allen takes cast and crew to London and makes a Hitchockian film that is very different and unique both in style and approach to the style that he is so well identified with. Match Point is about a bored husband, enjoying the privilege of being married to a wealthy wife, who starts a lusty relationship with a beautiful wannabe actress.
A delightful modern noir and mature script, and perhaps the kind of script that everyone had been waiting for, aided by the usual Woody Allen visual style that suits it perfectly, this is a surprising turn by the master filmmaker which recalls another who was able to switch between comedy and drama so well, Billy Wilder.
This film remains an unusual and rare addition to the widely comedic Woody Allen filmography, but nevertheless stands out as one of its most compellingly delightful.
