Review of Match Point (2005) by Ty P — 07 Feb 2012

Absolutley excellent. Perhaps the best modern film I've seen in ages. I could be biased to say that I enjoyed it puerly because of it's ulitmate darkness, but hey what can I say?

Having not seen any of Woody Allens films before that I can remember, I'm certainly enticed to see more. I always thought that he was some weedy dork who just like to make films about affairs in NY, just to see young people sleep together at his will, and ultimatley justify his own rampid sexualities. But... in this case, something old with something new sure seems to work.

Apart from the dark, unmoralistic approach to Match Point which I loved, it's reality, style and the perfection of the characters and settings is flawless. If anything is a downfall for this film, it's perhaps its overpolished look and appeal; and the fact that the whole film seems rushed and forced.

However I cannot say enough magnificent things about this films and its characters. Everyone fits perfectly, no matter how annoying or hated they may be throughout the film. Although I considered the choices Chris may have to make, in today's day and age, I never thought a film would even consider following that road, let alone show that it was the right move. This and the suspense throughout is what really made it stand out for me. An almost four star film until the very certain point, match point takes love to an honest and realistic approach, somewhat further than what films like Closer have tried to push. In the end, there is no such real thing as love, it is just an excuse for individauls to get what they want. And when it comes to the crunch, we abandon love and do what we can to survive. 5 stars for telling it like it is, and abandoning the bullshit of maybe.
