Review of Matador (1986) by Steff A — 19 May 2013
Well that was quite a ride! I'll give it that much! This is a cult film first and foremost. It started out as a giallo and with a five star rating, Then it turned into an Agatha Christie murder mystery with an Almodovar twist and a four star rating.
Near the end it went completely bonkers, spat cult mucus all over the viewers and fell to a three star rating. All because Almodovar didn't know how to finish it. How sad and disappointing indeed.
Still the film boasts excellent performances by Antonio Banderas, Carmen Maura, Chus Lampreave, Assumpta Serna, Julieta Serrano and the spanish Jeremy Irons, some good music, nice references to other films like "Duel in the Sun" and a charm that's hard to find in any picture nowadays.
In the end this is an entertaining, unintentionally funny, hit and miss picture that should only be seen as a cult piece of Almodovarian history.
