Review of Masters of the Universe (1987) by James S — 08 Dec 2008
Gloriously bad but surprisingly entertaining. One can't really believe that in the wake of Transformers and the current trend of live action 80s cartoon movies that this will go down as the definitive celluloid version of Masters of the Universe.
Looking like a cross between a severely budgeted Star Wars and Conan The Barbarian, this is partly enjoyable for how cheap it looks yet everyone is obviously taking it so seriously. It's kind of like watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Dolph Lundgren is suitable likeness for He-Man, while the baddies Skeletor and Evil-Lyn are spot on and there is some entertainment to be derived from seeing a very young Courtney Cox. Sadly, a lot of the Masters of the Universe stalwarts are missing.
....they couldn't even be bothered to include Battle Cat for christ's sake! But, for what it is, it's some mindless fun. It probably could have been so much better with a few quid thrown at it but as 80s cheese goes, it's not half bad.
