Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Volodymyr L — 01 Mar 2010
Set during the Napoleonic wars, Peter Weir's marine epic marks the revival of the adventure film as its exemplary achievement. Russell Crowe's stunning portrayal of Captain Jack Aubrey might well be the actor's top performance to date.
More than just selling you on historical verisimilitude, this film shows a subtle understanding of the power games and collective behaviour mechanisms at work in an isolated self-contained group that the ship's crew, in fact, is.
After all, it's the sea breeze and the rage of the waves that impart a very distinct charm to the extraordinary "Master and Commander".
