Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Elliott F — 03 Jul 2011
Peter Weir's meticulously crafted and clearly inspired nautical epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is an intelligent, masterful work of art. Russell Crowe plays Captain Jack Aubrey, the captain of the HMS Surprise, a British naval ship being relentlessly pursued by a phantom-like French ship called the Acheron.
The year is 1805, and, as the film tells us in an opening title card, "Oceans are now battlefields." Paul Bettany plays Dr. Stephen Maturin, Aubrey's close friend and trusted right hand man.
Both a rousing adventure film, a gentleman's thriller, and a fascinating character study of two friends under extreme circumstances, Master and Commander stands as one of the very best films of the decade.
