Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Joss D — 30 Jul 2012
A glorious perdiod drama set aboard a naval ship during the Napoleonic wars. The pacing is laboured and those who don't secretly long for a life at sea will probably be bored silly, but to those of us who's aspirations fall into this film's niche market, every moment is simply perfection.
The detail that has gone into the ship and the costumes, the excellent cast, the beautiful locations (nothing more beautiful than the Surprise herself) and of course the single most thrilling sea battle ever captured.
This is the beautiful lovechild of Hornblower, Pirates of the Caribbean and Gosford Park, and Peter Weir's finest moment. Such a terrible shame that it will never see a sequel.
