Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Alan V — 31 Dec 2012
A bit overlong, but a terrific high-seas adventure. Russell Crowe is great at the captain of a British ship being pursued by a French privateer. Although it's PG-13, the film is definitely not "Pirates of the Caribbean" and is far more concerned with presenting a historically accurate representation of warfare at sea during the Napoleonic Wars.
The ship battles are exciting, but the details and mechanics of sailing a warship that director Peter Weir focuses on are equally if not more interesting. Crowe commands the screen, but he is also balanced by Paul Bettany as the quietly intelligent ship's doctor.
All around a very unique and exciting film.
