Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by David D — 28 Mar 2013
I watched this movie first time by accident on an airplane and got hooked and when I got home I bought the DVD. I was so impressed with the film I then read in rapid succession all 20 books by Patrick O'Brian.
Although the film is a loose adaptation of at least 2 of the novels, Russel Crowe's performance as Jack Aubrey was so good that I imagined him as Aubrey throughout all 20 books. The level of detail and historical research that O'Brian brought to the books is translated onto the big screen and the viewer is left with a startling impression of how tough a life the sailors in Nelson's navy led.
