Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Robert H — 12 Apr 2013
It is hard to find a more perfect film. This cat and mouse tale of two commanders on the high seas is blessed action and adventure of the best sort. The film sports a very large cast and yet manages to build enough of a relationship with a good number of them that when the fallen fall, it has an impact on the viewer. But it is truly the beautiful look at sea life that gave me the most enjoyment. Seeing the child officers, grown sailors, their interaction, naval combat, ship repairs at sea, and just the able bodied work of what would have been true craftmen if quite something compared to the times we live in now.
The story itself isn't anything truly special but it keeps you interested and intreagued right up to the end.
If period action films are your cup of tea, this is one of the best out there. John Depp and his pirates don't hold much water compared to these seamen.
