Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Amrit A — 09 Dec 2013
I saw master and commander, the far side of the world yesterday. Well I didn't like it that much. The movie depicts the fight between a French ship, Acheron and an English ship, HMS Surprise in the period of Napoleon Bonaparte's quest to conquer England. The English ship under the command of Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), fight back hard against the powerful and big French ship. The movie depicts the journey of ship through the sea, the hardship faced by him and his crew and the victory achieved at last over Acheron.
Let me be honest while writing this review. There are some sequences which I liked about the movie. The first sequence of escape from the more powerful French ship, Acheron, was witty. The last sequence was also nicely shown. However, the movie passes through a phase of dullness where nothing really happens and it can lead you to boredom. The movie offers a lot about the history where battles were fought in sea and with ships. The cruel lives of the seamen were also nicely depicted but the movie itself failed to keep the momentum going throughout its run time.
I wouldn't say its a bad movie, but the storytelling was weak and loose in some parts of the movie, while it was spectacular in others.
Irrespective of what critics think, I am going to give it a 3 star.
