Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Rachel F — 12 Aug 2009
This one came to me as a monthly choice from my DVD club. I didn't really want it and wasn't going to watch it. I think it was largely due to the unfortunate title. It sounds more like some A&E half-hour bio and not at all like a story rich in action and character.
Judging books by their covers. Stupid me.
If you're even remotely into history or period films this thing is a must-see. It's a decent depiction of life on the sea long before luxury cruises. The battle scenes are riveting and terrifyingly brutal. But when the action drops it gets hard at times to keep your head from doing the same.
Still, I'm glad I never ran this one down to the pawn shop.
