Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Ovi G — 22 Sep 2011
One of the most incredible historical and memorable films i've seen. Abounds in depth and is overflown with brilliance. Everything you see from minute one is deeply thought into great detail that adds to the this masterpiece.
Quite a long film, that starts slow, getting the viewer acquainted with a sailor's life, life on a battleship and all it's downsides. From to point where they all form a family, to madness and to the ultimate killing machine as a result of clever tactics and courage. It picks up and we get to see action, as most of the film's plot is to follow another battleship (frigate), baring another flag, to the end of the world, or as long as needed to capture it. All this while the film is showing us the very thoughts of every man, may he be seaman, leftenant, doctor, naturalist or captain. The things the crew withstands for a country is outstanding. Their superstitions are crazy and might or will get the weaker minds killed but a great Captain leads them. There's scenes that add to the charisma of the storyline like: Dr. Stephen the naturalist, constantly trying to find new species, or the moments where Captain Jack and Stephen have their little instrument playing moments, priceless, and various more.
Russell Crowe, stupendous acting, one of Paul Bettany's best roles (i like him more now) and Billy Boyd (damn Pippin), got lost here, nah just kidding he did ok. The rest I dunno don't care but acting was top notch all around. The rest don't really matter, it's the type of film character driven yet mysterious, calm and great action shots (where there are any). Enjoy!
Peace!
