Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Taylor R — 21 Jun 2009
One of the best sea-captain and ship battle movies in a long time! Peter Weir directs an excellent picture with some great characters and offers many nods to some sea adventure classics ,e.g., 'Mutiny on the Bounty' (or even its 1980s remake 'The Bounty' starring another Australian, Mel Gibson).
. One has to be patient with this one and in the mood, as it does deliver once one is absorbed into this environment (which I highly recommend in BluRay in HD with the sound turned up completely). Russell Crowe is amazing as the ship's captain with Paul Bettany as the crew's doctor (which of course generate many parallels between Captain Kirk and Dr.
Bones from 'Star Trek' in terms of their relationship and discussions, no doubt without the sci-fi elements). Overall, a great blend of CGI and live effects, the stunts and battles are spectacular (with all the cannons, muskets, swinging on ropes, etc.
). It is unfortunate that this did not perform as well as expected at the box office, as I would have really enjoyed to see some more sequels released from the novels that this was based on originally.
After the film, it was very hard to let go of this seafaring world and come back to present-day reality.
