Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Javor B — 08 Sep 2011
Masterful entertainment that tells an epic story with grace and precision thanks to Peter Weir's steady hand as a storyteller. Russell Crowe gives a fine performance and Paul Bettany plays off of him nicely.
It's a shame this didn't become a franchise, as O'Brian's series of novels have great potential as this movie displays. This cracking depiction of life at sea trumps the cartoon-fantasy of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN in adventure, character, and entertainment value.
