Review of M*A*S*H (1970) by Ricardo V — 31 Oct 2007
This one is something to see. i've yet to see a single episode of the television show, it's just never been on my radar, but I did go back to watch the original and it's something that I love that you don't get much of in cinema, at least a very good one.
it's a black comedy that makes you laugh, then feel a little ashamed you're laughing. joking around an operating table isn't suppose to be funny, but it is. films like this, 'dr. strangelove', 'the player' (another film by director robert altman), they are black comedies that work on every level and get away with it.
it's funny to reflect on the fact that both the studio and the leading stars of this film saw young altman as a guy who didn't know what he was doing. he was young, didn't really talk much, so yeah I can see where they thought he was a bum, but in the end the film is funny, witty, intelligent and memorable.
it represents that period of the 1970's where film reached (in my opinion) its highest point. this film (regardless of the stupid cover of the dvd box), is a great film from a great director.
