This movie mixes the military and comedy beautifully. Donald Sutherland, an actor I believe is highly underrated, starred as Capt. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, the role which Alan Alda received in the TV show and made history with.
Richard Hooker, a bonafide army doctor with the 8055th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, wrote "M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors" in 1968, and this became the inspiration for the fine piece of filmmaking from Robert Altman in 1970.
