Comedic brilliance. The history of this film is more or less an underdog story. Altman was the test pilot for improvisational comedy in film, and this was his first landmark. The cast and crew were sort of the studio outcasts while making this film, so naturally they broke some rules and goofed off quite a bit.

The result is a unique collection of witty characters generating ridiculous scenarios to distract themselves, if only for a short while, from their dark circumstances. It's a great comfort to watch, superbly funny, but still sheds light on the tragic realities of war.

A warm and orginal film.
