I can't imagine any other actor playing the role of the monster other than Robert De Niro. It's one of the best roles he's ever played on screen. And what a role Mary Shelley created for literature--the "monster" is hideous and grotesque, but his savagery is born out of his alienation and desire for love.
What a perfect metaphor for mankind in general.
