Review of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) by Lee G — 14 Nov 2007
This relatively strict adaptation is continuously hit and miss. Several passages are adapted well and then the next scene is a silly joke. It's not scary and it doesn't try to be. Mary Shelley's parallels with man's biblical epistemology aren't pursued in the film as much as in the book and this absence is devastating to the characterizations of the Frankenstein and creation.
But the tones, textures, and epic scale of this film are immersing regardless. It's a noble effort from Branagh.
