Review of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) by Scubasteve Walter M — 26 Nov 2012
Let me just say right out of the gate, I'm a huge Ken Branagh fan, and have been since I was in elementary school :) However, this film is one of my least favourite of his. It's not a bad film, it's just not as good as it could've been.
The casting choices, to me, were hit and miss. Sure, Kenny B is in there, as is Aidan Quinn and Ian Holm, but why is the part of Elizabeth given to Helena Bonham Carter....and worse still, whose idea was it to cast Robert Di Niro??? The set and cinematography, of course, are wonderful, but we've all come to espect that from Branagh.
The real trouble here, is just down to acting. And that's why I only give it three stars.
