Review of Mary Reilly (1996) by Matthew C — 16 Jan 2010
Even Julia Roberts and her absolutely awful Irish (?) accent can't totally sink this moderately entertaining look at the Jekyll/Hyde story. For once, her homely, pasty look actually fits the film. I can totally buy her as a Victorian era scullery maid.
Moody and atmospheric, it does a pretty good job of capturing the old Hammer Horror vibe, which I enjoyed. And Malkovich is fun to watch as the two personalities. When you boil it down, though, it does become a familiar 'good girls always fall for bad boys' story.
This time the bad boy is about as bad as you can get, being the very embodiment of Dr. Jekyllâ??s murderous 'dark side.' Worth a watch, but hardly a classic.
